Groundbreaking celebrates construction at new St. Robert Catholic School

May 8, 2018
Leaders from the Diocese of Grand Rapids, St. Robert of Newminster Catholic Parish, and St. Robert Catholic School break ground in honor of renovations.

Leaders from the Diocese of Grand Rapids, St. Robert of Newminster Catholic Church, and the new St. Robert Catholic School broke ground on May 8, 2018, to celebrate preparations for the school to open in the fall.

The new school will welcome 2-, 3-, and 4-year-old preschoolers and kindergarteners when it opens in Ada in August. Before- and after-school care will also be available for students. Additionally, one grade will be added each following year, until the school is complete with 8th grade.

To prepare for welcoming students on the first day of school, renovations worth more than $1 million will transform existing parish spaces to serve students all school-day long. The renovations include turning eight existing rooms into four classrooms, plus a school office. The rooms will have new cabinetry, whiteboards, projectors including at least one SMART projector and one SMART table. A canopy is also being built over the school entrance, and a new plaground is being built between the school and the parish life center. As the school grows, future renovations will include a larger playground, and outdoor classroom space and learning areas.

At St. Robert Catholic school, the Catholic faith will be foundational to every area of curriculum and school culture. The academic focus will be on STEM fields: science, technology, engineering and math.

Most Rev. David J. Walkowiak, bishop of Grand Rapids, was present for the groundbreaking, along with Rev. Leonard Sudlik, pastor of St. Robert of Newminster Catholic Church; Rev. Colin Mulhall, parochial vicar of St. Robert of Newminster Catholic Church; Mrs. Liz Peters, founding principal of St. Robert Catholic School; Mike Jandernoa, St. Robert Catholic School trustee; David Faber, superintendent of Catholic schools; Michael Lown, chancellor/CFO; and others.
