Congratulations to Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic School (ABVM) in Belmont for winning the “2021 Colgate® and Meijer® School Challenge!” This recycling challenge was open to all public and private schools within Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Wisconsin.

ABVM, a National Blue Ribbon school, participated during the contest window of March 28 to June 19, 2021, and recycled 405.2 lbs. of oral care waste. In other words, they recycled 20,260 pieces of used toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes, and empty floss containers. That number combined with 9,872 online votes gave ABVM a total of 30,132 credits. The 2nd place winner received 12,598 credits.

“I am so proud of this community for making a commitment to recycling and respecting Earth, our common home. These used dental products are not typically recycled or thought of as being recyclable. We used this challenge as an opportunity to educate others, as well as be a good neighbor,”  said Mr. Domenic Franconi, principal.

ABVM, the Grand Prize winning school, was awarded $53,000 worth of upcycled and recycled desks, backpacks, pens and more. The school supplies donated by Colgate in partnership with Meijer and TerraCycle were unveiled in a VIP event on October 27, 2021. The VIP event also included 3 short speeches from representatives of TerraCycle, Colgate, and Meijer.
