Catholic Central High School in Grand Rapids has added a unique aspect to the student experience: a "house" system that provides additional opportunities to enhance students' personal development of faith, leadership, community, and service. Through being organized into four houses, students have new ways of growing and forming closer relationships with peers from all grade levels.
This initiative is in line with Catholic Central’s mission, which is to challenge students to know and love God, seek knowledge and truth, respect the dignity of each person, and contribute to society through leadership and service. The house system will also offer a structure for students to flourish in a smaller community setting, leading to further development of their character and virtue.
"The house system provides a more intentional structure for every student to belong to an ‘immediate family’ within the greater Catholic Central school community. This structure -- characterized by virtue, character formation, and camaraderie -- will help deepen relationships among our students while amplifying our mission," said Greg Deja, principal/CEO of Catholic Central High School.
The class of 2020 helped name each of the houses – Solanus Casey, Mother Teresa, Maximilian Kolbe, and Oscar Romero. Each house was named after a saint or blessed member of the Catholic faith, giving students a role model to follow throughout the year.
The house system was unveiled on Aug. 29, at a field day at Catholic Central’s athletic complex. The day was filled with fun activities fostering the bonds within each house.
