Diocese of Grand Rapids Catholic schools welcome and cherish all children

Welcoming Communities

Our mission is rooted in Christ, who calls us to value and love all people. Families of many faiths and cultures find strength and meaning in our schools. Families of all financial means do, too. Our excellent value and scholarship opportunities make Catholic education an attractive, affordable option for all who seek it.

If there is any question on the welcoming atmosphere in the Diocese of Grand Rapids, we can look to Charlie at Holy Spirit School. Charlie has hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which prevents him from running in PE or recess. As a result, his fifth grade classmates invented, Charlie’s Game, a new soccer game he could play alongside his friends.

Holy Spirit School Principal Pat Kalahar said, “They saw that someone was in need of help and was not fitting in, and so they came up with a way that Charlie could be included in everything. That’s, in a nutshell, what we’re trying to teach them: What would Jesus do if he were here and someone was left out or needed help or needed assistance?”
