Outdoor classroom to incorporate hands-on STEM activities at IHM

Outdoor hands-on STEM classroom

An outdoor classroom taking shape on the campus of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School in Grand Rapids will give students another opportunity to interact with God’s creation.

Under construction this summer, the outdoor classroom will mainly serve IHM preschoolers although the whole school will have access. Planned features include three teaching spaces in a pavilion, a grotto and on a blue stone patio. There will also be raised plant beds, water tables, sensory areas, natural slides and natural balance beams.

Adding an outdoor classroom on campus is another way IHM offers students an experience-based education, said principal Michael Thomasma. The hands-on activities will include STEM opportunities and enrich students’ experience.
