State dashboard to provide COVID-19 school data

Beginning this week, the State of Michigan will start publishing a weekly list of K-12 schools and colleges where cases and outbreaks of COVID-19 have occurred, including the number of confirmed positive cases and outbreaks, defined as more than two cases linked by a time or place, at each affected school. We welcome this transparency as another effort to promote the common good.

We remain committed to the transparency we promised you in our return to school plan, Living Our Mission in Today’s Reality. In the event of a confirmed positive case at a Catholic school, leaders will follow the practices described in our plan. These practices include cooperating with the local health department to facilitate contact tracing, informing their school community of the presence of a confirmed positive case, and proactively contacting the families of students considered to be a close contact.

Because we are living in a pandemic, we anticipate that we will have individuals test positive at times. We care about all of you, and our primary goal is to keep our faculty, staff, and the students entrusted to us healthy and whole in body and spirit. Each one of us must remain vigilant in wearing facial coverings in school and following all requirements of our return to school plan, including staying home if you are sick, maintaining proper social distancing, and washing your hands regularly.

Our first weeks back in the classroom have exceeded our expectations. It is a joy to be together again in community! We welcome and support the State of Michigan’s transparency and remain committed to working with our local health departments to ensure we can safely continue with in-person instruction.

Catholic schools in the Diocese of Grand Rapids are an alliance of 31 vibrant learning communities (26 elementary and five high schools) serving more than 6,340 preschool through 12th grade students throughout West Michigan. Our schools inspire young people to grow in Catholic faith and grace, achieve more in school and life, develop creativity and character, and feel welcomed and cherished for their unique gifts. We partner with parents to awaken the whole child to a world of light and life — that grows better and brighter when children reach their potential.
