A student at St. Patrick in Parnell is one of four 3rd graders who have won a poster competition promoting safe driving in construction zones. The Kent County Road Commission and the Kentwood Public Works Department sponsored the Work Zone Safety Poster Contest.
Maria Huston’s winning entry encourages attention driving in work zones when it’s dark out, showing a road stretching under a starry sky with the message, “Be careful at night.”
Fifty-four students entered the contest. Submissions were judged on creativity, originality and their ability to strongly convey a message. The winning entries have been transferred onto 18”x18” aluminum signs for the road commission to promote work zone safety at local events. The winning artists receive a 10”x10” replica, a Kent County Road Commission sweatshirt and a certificate of appreciation (which was also given to each contestant).
“Community support is crucial to the work that we do and to the safety of our motorists and workers,” said Kent County Road Commission managing director Steve Warren. “We applaud our newest ‘safety advocates’ for helping us spread the word and sharing important tips for driving through a work zone.”
