Please tell us about yourself.
I've been a teacher for nine years, and seven of those years have been in Catholic education. I truly believe that education is my calling because I was in my senior year of nursing school when I decided to become a teacher! I was driving home from a clinical experience at an elementary school, and God put it on my heart to switch majors. It was the best day I ever had in my nursing education, and it had nothing to do with the clinical skills - it was my interaction with the kids! Nine years later, they are still my favorite part about being a teacher.
Describe your school.
All Saints Academy is exactly where I would send my own kids to school. The families here are a teacher's dream - supportive, welcoming, and great partners in their children's education. The teachers are creative and innovative, and the kids are faith-filled, well-mannered and eager to learn.
Catholic schools are different because...
Christ is at the center of all of our expectations, planning and reasons for being here!
What drew you to teaching at a Catholic school?
When I moved to Grand Rapids, I applied to Catholic schools only. I knew that I was limiting my opportunities, but I simply did not want to work anywhere else. After teaching for two years previously in schools that weren’t Catholic, I switched to a Catholic school. My joy of teaching and overall happiness improved tenfold. I am a product of Catholic education - kindergarten through college, and I believe that my character and spiritual health would not be the same had my parents not made the commitment to Catholic education. It is my way of saying "thank you" to the Church for my well-being today.
What is your favorite part about teaching? What are your greatest rewards?
My favorite part about teaching is forming a relationship with the kids. They are truly a blessing in my life. I come to school, and I feel like I get to see the best of humanity - their kindness and innocence is the respite I need from the adult world and global problems. I love helping children recognize their gifts and talents, and I also love helping them build their character. I feel a great responsibility in shaping them into who they will be one day, and that opportunity excites me! I have had the pleasure of teaching in many different schools across Illinois and Michigan, and I have kept in touch with kids from every location. I am rewarded by the confidence they exude, their goals and achievements, and the smiles on their faces.
In your experience, what do Catholic schools do best? What does your school do best?
Catholic schools teach the whole child because we are free to help children grow their spiritual side. At All Saints Academy, we set the high expectation of forming saints to serve all. The kids know that they are all called for considerable things, and because of this, they strive for greatness. Being able to set the bar high in Catholic schools shows students their potential and as a result, students are more apt to be successful.
