With first quarter complete, mitigation strategies help keep Catholic schools safe

With the first quarter of the school year complete, COVID-19 mitigation strategies are helping to keep Catholic schools safe for students, faculty, and staff.

Our mitigation strategies, outlined in our diocesan return to school plan and in each school’s individual return to school plan, are key to our continued ability to offer in-person instruction. Our alliance of Catholic schools values in-person instruction. When we surveyed parents this summer it was the clear preference for learning this year. We are grateful for the efforts throughout our school communities to follow the protocols that make in-person instruction possible.

In the first nine weeks of the school year, there were 38 positive cases of COVID-19 within the 31 Catholic schools across the diocese. In each case, there was no evidence that traced the exposure back to the schools within our alliance.

The mitigation strategies employed by our Catholic schools are working, and we will continue to prioritize in-person instruction while offering remote learning when necessary.

Catholic schools in the Diocese of Grand Rapids are an alliance of 31 vibrant learning communities (26 elementary and five high schools) serving more than 6,000 preschool through 12th grade students throughout West Michigan. Our schools inspire young people to grow in Catholic faith and grace, achieve more in school and life, develop creativity and character, and feel welcomed and cherished for their unique gifts. We partner with parents to awaken the whole child to a world of light and life — that grows better and brighter when children reach their potential.
